Debre Libanos Monastery & Portuguese Bridge

 


Ethiopia’s most holy sites of Debre Libanos  monastery (110km ADD) founded in the 13th century by priest  Tekla Haimanot, today one of Ethipia’s most  renowed saints.

The church has beautiful Stained glass windows, and contains mosaic figures, which is found in the facade and some intersting mural paintings by the well-known Ethiopian artist Afework Tekele.

In the premises you can watch the nuns’ residence, built in the 1920s, the cave containing holy water and the huge monk’s kitchen ,dating from the early 20th century.

 

You can also watch the cross-shaped tomb dedicated  to those executed by the Facist Italy on 20 May 1937, 267 monks all with out distinction. Although women are not allowed to enter the monastery, they can visit other areas of the compouned. Drive to a 16th Century Bridge still in use today and said to have been built by Portuguese.
